Following the event, which received boating industry and trade press praise, Tinderhouse saw a surge in application usage. A clean, easy-to-use, and flashy Web site supported by a collection of relatively inexpensive GPS-ready mobile devices now supports a long tail niche community that was otherwise under-served and largely ignored by larger marine consumer electronics providers focused only on <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

This Newtonian-inspired law and universal truth for the physical world of geography has equally held true for human, geopolitical, and socioeconomic geographical patterns. The doctrine may soon need rewriting though. Social networking applications of a flat, connected, instantaneous, and networked-world of social and human collaboration are beginning to challenge the principle.

I recently spoke with Shane Lennon, SVP Strategy & Marketing at GyPSii about their location-enriched social networking & publishing service now available on devices offered by Garmin, Samsung, and Ramar. Six months following their launch, Gypsii is on its way to plotting a future where mobile users record life events, with subsequent social butterfly effects ripping across the globe at blink-of-an-eye Internet speeds, bringing people closer together in time and place continuum's. Gypsii use-cases range from northeastern US users contributing awe affinity to a post by a Norwegian user documenting a blizzard that dumped over 20ft of snow on Strynevatnet<!--[if gte mso 10]>

illustrious career, he hasn't changed over time. He's still as passionate about
GIS, geography, and mapping as my son is about chocolate in a candy shop. Jack is genuinely interested in his users work across industries, and as usual, he
kicked off the 2008 ESRI Users Conference by publicly recognizing their efforts—noble efforts
in what Jack considers a necessary professional calling to improve
conditions of the planet, society, and humanity. Award after
award, Dangermond recognized the accomplishments of users around the world with use
cases ranging from mapping poverty in Venezuela for economic development initiatives, to the US Dept of Interior's
use of GIS to contain wildfires in California & their program to map threatened polar bear
range habitats in the arctic.

Beyond these annual recognitions, Jack always has a vision to present. This year, his
vision was Action—geography in action. By
action, he discovered through his decades of work with ESRI users that they are collectively creating
more sustainable action leading to better, smarter, more informed decisions . He attributed this phenomenon to what he coins "the GIS Web" of collaborative mapping and geographic knowledge sharing. Jack's GIS Web is clearly a social fabric, but also an information architecture to support social exchanges. ESRIs GIS Web is not only a global participatory system of content publishers, but also an architecture designed around cloud computing concepts of the world wide computer for consumption. And all publishing, consumption, and sharing of geographic information & knowledge is available to all citizens & consumers, knowledge workers, GIS workers, and enterprises - across desktops, mobile devices, and on Web browsers.

The ArcGIS 9.3 release is the underpinning of this social and information architecture, and Jack cited and demonstrated improvements in the areas of performance & quality in the way of map caching (which was lighting fast) to share more efficiently, extended support for connected mobile GPS-enabled devices, and in the areas of extensibility with new Web mapping API support for FLEX, javascript, and Silverlight designed to extend more for the Web developer. His anticipated patterns of usage for the new technology inlcude mashups, Web mapping, mobile mapping, enterprise computing, distributed spatial data infrastructures, and support for Google's user-generated GeoWeb by way of KML standards support. All of these, plus making Microsoft Virtual Earth services available for ESRI users to consume, are part of ESRIs endless mission of making geographic knowledge available to everyone. They are clearly on track to making that mission a vision reality despite all the disruptive mapping innovations they've encountered in the last three years.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.maperture.net/maperture/2008/7/28/apple-maps.html"><rss:title>Apple "Maps"</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.maperture.net/maperture/2008/7/28/apple-maps.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>iPhone</dc:subject>

Apple has an open requisition out for a software engineer to work on the "Maps team". According to the req:

The iPhone and iPod touch Maps team is looking for a proactive and

The specific number is $2.2B by 2013. Dominique's work in the area of Outdoor GPS is conservative and therefore what I consider honest and good, so I respect what he has to say, but I'm having a hard time swallowing this pill.

The first wave of Carrier LBS infrastructure deployments lasted about 3 years between 1999 and 2001, and after that brief time when MPCs and GMLCs were purchased as standalone pieces of monolithic SS7 equipment, larger infrastructure players such as Ericsson and Nokia started giving the stuff away with network upgrades, destroying business models overnight for those focused on selling standalone LBS gear. Today, everything is IP-based with SUPL, and that means no more fork lifting redundancies of monstrous, expensive, fault-tolerant servers, but rather installing IT-grade inexpensive racks that handle TCP/IP and SIP traffic. The software that runs on it is equally IT-grade and should only command the same inexpensive price tag for a carrier. Compound this with the arrival of Google's Cell-ID offering beyond the command & control of wireless networks, further reducing the value of this once carrier-only information asset, and I wonder... who will pony-up the projected billions to pay infrastructure providers for what is now a commodity?

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.maperture.net/maperture/2008/7/17/t-mo-us-gets-it.html"><rss:title>T-Mo US Gets It</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.maperture.net/maperture/2008/7/17/t-mo-us-gets-it.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Business Models Navigation MoSoSo Personal Navigation Devices</dc:subject>
<!--
